“The one band that’s local that’s breaking out and I think is going to be big in 2009 is Chester French. They’re actually Harvard grads who were recently signed by Pharrell from N.E.R.D. They had a song appear on Entourage, recently released an EP on iTunes, and their album will be released next year on Interscope. They have a kind of retro, ’60s sound, and they cover a lot of ground with their sounds.
“The Pill at Great Scott — it’s been around for 10 years, but I feel like it’s having a resurgence, and it’s kind of evolved. It went from a new-wave indie night to a lot of electro stuff. I feel like the Pill’s a great club night, and on a national level, people are paying more attention to what they’re doing.
“Nowadays, a lot of music comes from blogs and stuff like that, and I think they’re a step ahead. If something’s posted on a blog on Wednesday, you may hear it at the Pill on Friday. It seems like people have tried to emulate it, but it hasn’t really worked. It’s kind of like a brand now.”
