Susan Callender

Age: 45.

Occupation: owner of Boston Unique Events.

How often do you work out? At least five to six times a week.

How do you stay in shape? I do a lot of weight lifting, cardio, and boxing conditioning.

What inspires you to work out? A desire to look and feel fit — that’s important to me.

How closely do you watch what you eat? Very. I know everything that I eat every day. I wrote it down for years. I also cut out cocktails. I decided they do nothing to enhance my life. All they do is add calories and make me tired.

What are your favorite foods? As strict as I am, a lot of [the foods I eat] I don’t enjoy, but I do know they’re good for me. I eat a lot of egg whites, lean protein, leafy greens, and a lot of flax seed. I drink a lot of water and a lot of green tea.

What indulgence food tempts you the most? I crave Pearl hot dogs and gourmet caramel corn. I’ve been known to buy it mailorder for like, $50 or more, something stupid like that; it’s my little guilty pleasure.

How has running a catering business affected the way you view fitness and diet? I think my focus [on fitness] is due to the industry that I’m in. I have no desire to be an overweight food professional. I could try the food we serve every day, but I decide not to. I get a kick out of the challenge of being disciplined.

What is your favorite exercise? I love the conditioning circuits at Nonantum Boxing Club. I like the exercises that were the hardest for me to do and learn, and I’ve conquered them. I like highpower, fastpaced, heartthumping exercise routines. I feel like I get my benefit from them.

What is your least favorite exercise? I don’t like yoga or Pilates; they put me to sleep, and I mean while I’m doing it. They make me want to take a nap.

What do you consider your best body part? I would say that most people comment on my arms and my back. But I have a very different view of myself than others do.

Any parts you’re insecure about? No. I love me now, and loving me is a great thing. I didn’t always love me. I’m very happy in my skin.
