Ah, the good old days: when men were men and a shave was a shave! With its old-school red, white, and blue barber pole twirling by the front door, State Street Barbers (1313 Washington Street, Boston, 617.753.9990) captures a bygone era when The Good Old Gang would wander down to the local barber shop for a flat-top, a mug of suds, and some good conversation (or, at least, a chance to trade game scores). They offer up a hot lather shave ($34) that's so popular it's even picked up steam as a part of bachelor-party outings, and we hear some of the groomsmen aren't shy about sneaking in some of those mugs. The flat-top, though, we'll leave in the rose-colored past.
