Sweets with sass

The cupcake may just be the perfect food: sweet, sassy, and oh so adorable. That's why we've been drooling over Kickass Cupcakes (378 Highland Avenue, Somerville, 617.628.CUPS), a newcomer to Davis Square. The menu, created by owner Sara Ross, a California-based pastry chef before she moved to our area four years ago, focuses on the best ingredients - including premium chocolates and local dairy products - and boasts not only standard flavors but exotics like the Mojito (rum-soaked, with sugar-cane-lime frosting and mint), the Lucky Cupcake (lemon cake topped with white-chocolate buttercream and candied ginger), and her pièce de résistance, the Deep-Fried Cupcake, served drizzled with chocolate syrup. Kickass Ltd. Editions, the chef's daily whim, aims to keep devotees satisfied between seasonal menu changes. To wash it all down, try Ross's Cupcake Shooters: three-ounce house-made beverages such as vanilla-bean-infused milk. Delivery is available for a dozen cupcakes or more, and the ever-creative Ross also has plans for events including gallery shows and wine-and-cupcake tastings.
