Friday, June 6: Broken Spindles
by Liza Weisstuch | May 30, 2008
A select few cities have an indigenous music style. New Orleans has big, brassy jazz; Memphis has soul; Chicago has the blues; and Omaha has its tightly-knit, ever-flourishing indie music scene. Thanks, Conor Oberst! The Bright Eyes singer has long been kicking it with the guys from the nouveau electronic punk outfit the Faint, and they all record on Saddle Creek Records, which has come to be known as the arbiter of Omaha sound. Since the Faint’s Joel Peterson spun off on his own, he’s been making music under the name Broken Spindles. The only thing broken, though, is our heart when we hear his sparkling electronic compositions — sonic collages of twinkling piano, dance beats, echoy vocals, and driving guitar riffs. Tonight he plugs in his Omaha sound at the Middle East Upstairs (472 Mass Ave, Cambridge, 617.864.3278).The show starts at 9 p.m.; tickets are $10 at the door, $9 in advance. Get them at the Middle East.
