TUESDAY, JULY 8
It was 1968 when Odetta, the activist and high priestess of folksy soul, last performed at the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park. Operated by its eponymous founder, a longtime Boston cultural icon, the venue shut down a decade later. Four years ago, several Boston organizations teamed up to resurrect the spot as a lively outdoor venue. Now that it’s up and running, the highly decorated (Grammy Awards and a rare Library of Congress Living Legend Award are just a few of the honors in her collection), inimitable, indefatigable Odetta is returning to launch the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park series at Franklin Park (at the Valley Gates next to the Playstead, Boston, 617.282.2881) tonight at 6 p.m. Odetta is freespirited; her show is just free.
