Replace a couple of magistrates with county sheriffs, armor with dungarees and spurs, wine with whiskey, bare bodkins with pistols in holsters, and men on horseback with, well, men on horseback, and a Shakespeare play is practically a spaghetti Western. We can only guess that’s the logic of the devoted, intrepid New York theater troupe portrayed in Richard Nelson’s How Shakespeare Won the West. Inspired by true tales, this world premiere, kickstarting the new season at the Huntington Theatre (264 Huntington Ave, Boston, 617.266.0800), tells the story of a gang of actors who head west to entertain the gold-digging 49ers. In true buckaroo style, most of the drama happens on the road. Not even the incantations of weird sisters can help when Indians are on your trail.
