The Film: Gomorrah (out February 27)
Taking an unflinching look at organized crime in Naples, Italian director Matteo Garrone turns Roberto Saviano’s bestselling exposé Gomorrah into gritty grist for a handful of intersecting tales about the Camorra gangland clan. Don’t count on any happy endings.
The Food: Da Vinci Ristorante
Before you spend an evening wallowing in Naples’s corruption, wallow in its cuisine for a while. Head to Da Vinci (162 Columbus Avenue, Boston, 617.350.0007) for house-made pasta and delicately cooked fish specialties that are the region’s hallmark.
The Film: All About Steve (out March 6)
Sandra Bullock’s back on the big screen with goofy rom-com All About Steve. Here, she plays a batty crossword-puzzle creator who falls so hard for the CNN cameraman she meets on a blind date, she’ll brave wild and crazy weather just to see him again.
The Food: Hungry Mother
Seeing as All About Steve sends its characters roaming down South to chase hurricanes, it seems only fitting to preface this film with a plate of sub–Mason Dixon comfort food. Hungry Mother (233 Cardinal Medeiros Avenue, Cambridge, 617.499.0090) has you covered, offering such Southern delights as baked grits and cornmeal catfish.
The Film: Watchmen (out March 6)
For nearly a decade, fans of Alan Moore’s subversive graphic novel — set in a jittery alternate universe in which superheroes have been outlawed — have been nervously awaiting its cinematic debut. Maybe smash hits like The Dark Knight and Iron Man have falsely gotten our hopes up, but it looks like director Zack Snyder might just pull this one off.
The Food: Miracle of Science
No local bar revels in nerd chic quite as gleefully as Miracle of Science (321 Mass Ave, Cambridge, 617.868.2866), making it a natural prelude to this nuclear-physics-steeped comicbook movie. And if MoS’s signature periodictable- style menu isn’t enough to convince you these guys know their chemistry, the bartenders’ mad mixology skills will.
