SATURDAY, JUNE 27
The Room is one of
those rare movies so terrible that it approaches mythic status: you can’t see
it to believe it because seeing it doesn’t make its existence any less crazy.
Written, directed, and produced by star Tommy Wiseau, the 2003 indie film is,
supposedly, a domestic drama about a disastrous love triangle. But the acting,
writing, and directing are all so off-the-rails awful that it’s difficult to
comprehend how human hands could’ve sculpted such a surreal monolith of suck.
The unintentionally hilarious cult hit has inspired party-like screenings
filled with fans screaming back at the screen, struggling to understand how The
Room could have made it out of the editing room while celebrating
the miracle that it is. If John Cassavetes, The Great Gatsby, and Born
to Run had twin babies, and one of those babies was evil and
couldn’t stop vomiting, and if that vomit raised $6 million to make a movie,
that movie couldn’t touch The Room. Touch it for
yourself at the midnight screening at the Coolidge Corner Theatre (290
Harvard Street, Brookline, 617.734.2500). Tickets are $7.75 at
