Guillermo Scott Herren is an experimental hip-hop producer
who performs under the nom du guerre Prefuse 73. His woozy, loopy
mashups are peppered with glitchy rhythms. They’d would work as a soundtrack to
a nature film about Latin American rainforests as easily as they’d serve as the
sonic backdrop to a frenzied, fun-filled night in any urban jungle. He borrows
generously from classic be-bop recordings, a potpourri of world music, and
hip-hop and connects the samples together with the indelible glue of funk. His
gorgeous soundscapes seem created for gazing at the great outdoors. In other
words, he’s the perfect choice to launch the WAVELENGTHS series, a
weekly happening featuring digital music linchpins that kicks off tonight on
the ICA
Harborwalk (100
Northern Avenue, Boston,
617.478.3100). The series comes courtesy of the Institute of Contemporary
Art and World Music/CRASHarts. Get tickets
($25/$20 students and ICA
members) by visiting www.worldmusic.org or www.icaboston.org or by calling 617.478.4103.
