So it seems to be quasi-official: Boston
is the Hollywood
of the East. But long before the wardrobe trailers were parked along the
Common, the Color of Film Collaborative and ACT Roxbury were teaming up to
produce the Roxbury Film Festival, now in its eleventh year
of supporting independent filmmakers and bringing paparazzi-worthy
personalities to the city to support the effort. This summer, there will be
more than 50 films screened over four days at venues throughout the city. It
all kicks off Wednesday night with a pre-festival comedy festival at
Slades (958 Tremont
Street, Boston,
617.442.4600), hosted by local funnyman, Jonathon Gates. After the opening
night reception on Thursday at Hibernian Hall (184 Dudley
Street, Boston, 617.849.6324), catch the New England premiere of Jump
the Broom: A Musical, accompanied by a gospel choir performance
and a Q&A with Brandon DeShazer, an R&B singer who stars in the movie.
The festival concludes Sunday at the MFA (465 Huntington Avenue,
Boston, 617.267.9300) with the New England premiere of Why
We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy, featuring just about
everyone you’ve ever heard of. For a full schedule of all the events and
screenings, visit www.roxburyfilmfestival.org.
