The return of college students to Boston has us reflecting
on all the valuable lessons we learned in our school days (besides, of course,
how to best scam a bouncer with a fake ID). Many of us got our first real dose
of Fashion 101 back then, because unlike the sweatshirt-with-pearls types
playing Frisbee at ivy-covered suburban campuses, living in the city introduced
edgier looks to our impressionable minds. With
Akademiks,
we’ve found fashion that reawakens our electric youth without making us feel
like outdated poseurs. The men’s and women’s lines boast an urban aesthetic:
slim-fitting, assertive denims; plaids that are city-wise, not farm-raised; and
flattering tees that juxtapose bright, cheery splashes of graffiti tagging with
the darker elements of street art (skulls are a recurring motif). We love some
of the September buys coming into
Expressions of Boston (486
Washington Street, Boston, 617.423.7111), especially the black track jacket
($78) with sporty white-striped trim and piping details (it makes us feel like
running laps in P.E.) and the Delta Vest ($72), a gray zip-front sweater vest
of cozy cotton that’s perfect for autumn layering. Though the line is
celebrating its tenth year, these new arrivals look first-day-of-school fresh —
and give us the chance to flex our fashion smarts in time for fall.
