It is completely unacceptable to let a summer pass by without enjoying
at least one open-air rock concert, and it is borderline impossible to find a
band better suited for that purpose than
The Flaming Lips. Their rock is so
psychedelic, you might think you’re having an acid flashback to the Summer of
Love (not that you actually experienced it the first time around). “She Don’t
Use Jelly,” “Do You Realize?” and “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (With All Your
Power)” are among the trippy tracks you might recognize from a past smoky dorm
room, tailgating van, or any other locale filled with the warm, fuzzy memories
of misspent youth. But The Flaming Lips have earned their cult following as much for their
wildly innovative live shows as for their records, each performance promising some
kind of complex audio-visual spectacle with puppets, projections, plastic
bubbles, and plenty of bizarre performance art that will leave you either
scratching your head in confusion or nodding it in time to the “beat of the
universe, man.” It all goes down at the
Bank of America Pavilion (290 Northern Avenue, Boston, 617.728.1600), where the show starts at 7
p.m. For tickets ($29–$49), hit up
