GET THIS ...
Not that we have anything against the subtlety of a softly
weathered surface or the delicacy of gently curving lines, but sometimes, one
feels the need to make a straightforward design statement —
the bolder, the better. Fortunately, we Bostonians have the South End’s Boxx
Furniture (40 Waltham
Street, Showroom 104, Boston, 617.556.2699) to fill our
statement-making decor needs. With its clean geometric lines and shimmering
glass surface, their Gorge table ($4100) doesn’t beat around the bush
when it comes to making its presence known. Of course, it helps that designer
Jose Pascual has coated the metal surfaces with a shiny lacquer finish
available in a yellow so lemony bright it will make your mouth pucker (in a
good way) and this deliciously ripe apple red that begs to be placed smack dab
in the middle of the room for all to admire. Elegantly linear and minimal in
detail with just a hint of classic chinoiserie, this table, for sale at Lekker
(1317 Washington Street,
Boston, 617.542.6464), strikes
the perfect decorating note: bold and clear and definitely ready for center
stage.

... OR THAT
Remember the smell of a freshly sharpened
pencil, gripped tightly in the hand of your single-digit-aged self? Can you
recall your eager attempts to test out your cursive along the inviting lines of
a brand-new notebook — and the irresistible temptation to pass the
resulting wobbly-lettered notes to your friends during those interminable
long-division lessons? Before email and texting causes us to forget just how to
put pen to paper, why not go retro and show how classy you are at the same time
by hand-writing a note on an actual piece of quality stationery (and we’re not
talking pale-yellow sticky notes). Designed by celebrated interior designer and
socialite Celerie Kemble, these Dempsey & Carroll engraved note
cards ($65 for 10) feature a raised bamboo-print pattern that’s
perfect for bordering your sincerest words of appreciation — or
even a heartfelt “Do you like me? Circle yes, no, or maybe.” Just make sure u
avoid one-letter abbreviations and dot all your i’s. Stock up at the Dempsey
& Carroll Boutique in Louis Boston (234 Berkeley Street, Boston, 617.236.5110).
