As
STUFF's official music
consultant, I've been telling you what "essential" songs you should obtain
(legally of course) so that by the end of the year you'll have created the
greatest 24-song "Best of '09" comp to give as a holiday gift. If you missed
the first 12,
find them here. Now, the next six essential songs
of 2009:
Pearl Jam - "The Fixer"
They are back and ... happy!? In 2006, Bush was in office and
their lead single was "World Wide Suicide." In 2009, with Obama in office, they
return with a sunnier single called "The Fixer." Hmmm...
Taylor Swift - "You Belong with Me"
I really wanted to hate Taylor Swift. I ran screaming from
the first smash single. With "You Belong to Me," I wasn't so lucky. Plus, her
MTV VMA performance on the subway was kind of awesome. Get over it and get
into it.
White Lies - "Death"
To Lose My Life may be my #1 album of 2009. Put
on your tightest, blackest jeans, and get ready to sing along. "Death" is an
anthem!
Two Door Cinema Club - "Something Good Can Work"
I don't know much about the TDCC. I do know they are from
Northern Ireland, so they are my people, and they write fun garage-pop songs.
This song is super catchy and just pop-synthy enough.
Kings of Leon - "Use Somebody"
Even though I have heard this one BILLION times and honestly
don't think their new album is anywhere near as good as their first three, you
can't leave this off a 2009 compilation. It's become the biggest rock hit of
the year.
Weezer - "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You
To"
"I Want You To" is everything perfect about Weezer - quirky
lyrics, crunchy guitar, hand claps, and a 3:26 runtime.
