From a Red Sox sing-along to the name of a local cable show,
that "Dirty Water" song has inspired countless acts of we-heart-Boston
camaraderie over the years. But as often as we give good-natured ribbing to
that River Charles, we also know that when we run our tap, we're lucky to live
in a place with safe, clean water for drinking and cleaning. Sadly, that's not so
everywhere. But if Cambridge-based non-profit
FACE Africa has its way,
tonight's
1st Annual Gala - A Clean Water Benefit will be
a successful start to fundraising for one of the organization's main
initiatives: bringing clean water and sanitation to impoverished rural
communities in Liberia.
The gala gets underway at 6 p.m. at the
Taj Boston (15 Arlington Street, Boston, 617.237.0380) with a reception and
silent auction (including high-end wins like a week-long Caribbean
getaway). A three-course dinner will be served at 7 p.m., and the evening will
honor Peter Thum, founder of Ethos Water and Giving Water, as thanks for his
business's work in the developing world (but he's also a former vice president
of Starbucks, so we can levy at least a little blame for our Frappuccino
addiction). Tickets are $250 for the black-tie-optional affair, and we know
wallets are tight for tux season - but for its first benefit, we
want FACE to get a good head start.
