Saturday, January 17: Logan 5 and the Runners

Is there life on Mars? We may never know, but one thing we can be sure of is that as long as there are cosmic mysteries — and glitter, eyeliner, and platform boots — there will be electro-glam rockers to sing about it. In the tradition of Bowie, T. Rex, and Roxy Music comes local quintet Logan 5 and the Runners, who’ll be releasing their debut studio album, Featurette, at a CD-release party tonight at Great Scott (1222 Comm Ave, Allston, 617.566.9014). So far, their biggest claim to fame is that they’re the first glam band to record an album in a barn. But with glittery icons as their forerunners and bold use of a toy organ made by Mattel circa early 1970s, the limits are cosmic  They’re joined by the Daily Pravda and the Luxury. Get retro-futuristic at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 and available at the Great Scott box office or at www.ticketweb.com.

Sunday, January 4: Glasvegas

Sunday, January 4: Glasvegas

Glasvegas was just your average rough-edged art punk band that takes its cues as much from Elvis and Dion and the Belmonts as they do from rockabilly and the shoegaze style that their fellow countrymen, the Jesus and Mary Chain, made popular. Then British record mogul Alan McGee spotted them in the same Glasgow pub where he first laid ears on Oasis. Next thing they knew, he declared them the greatest Scottish band in the last 20 years and there was a record deal. Now they’re doing a loop in the States in support of their eponymous full-length album debut. If the idea of a tuneful doo-wop band on a wee noise pop bender piques your curiosity, stop by Great Scott (1222 Comm Ave, Allston, 617.566.9014) tonight. Doors open at 8 p.m.; get tickets ($12) at www.greatscottboston.com.

Sunday, October 12: Vivian Girls

Sunday, October 12: Vivian Girls

The late Henry Darger, painter, writer, hermit, and artsy perv, wrote about young sisters he called the Vivian Girls in his posthumously published 15,145-page epic The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. They suffered at the hands of brutes. The art-punk female trio from Brooklyn who perform as the Vivian Girls seem ready to kick some brute ass. But for all their hard-driving garage-rock sensibility, their songs are rounded out with the sugarcoated sparkle of 1960s girl bands and sweet, angelic harmonies that remind us of everything from Brit bands like Heavenly and Shop Assistants to the Pixies to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Unlike Darger, they keep it real. They’re at Great Scott (1222 Comm Ave, Boston, 617.566.9014) tonight at 9 p.m. Tickets are $12; get them at www.ticketweb.com.

After the last time you were in Allston, when you thought you were going to a party but ended up at a fraternity rager, you swore you’d never go back. But Allston’s matured, so it’s time to give it another chance. The last year has brought some trendy...

According to their MySpace page, Boston band the Living Sea counts New Order, Heart, Thin Lizzy, mermaids, and beer as a few of their many influences. We would add to that catalog Karen O. of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs; Tortoise; and Chicago electronic-tinged...

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10 Boston loves a good Berklee-bred musician, and we stumbled upon a whole group of them - the Brooklyn-based foursome Via Audio - when they performed at a local charity event recently. We loved the way their mature, polished sound collided...
