 THURSDAY, APRIL 23 It’d be really easy to refer to Deer Tick as roots rock and call it a day, but Providence native John McCauley’s foursome supplies layers of charm and intrigue beneath the finger-picked guitardriven melodies. There’s Tom Waits-like gritty troubadourism, harmonies inspired by the Beach Boys, and despairingly cynical lyrics (“You’re way too beautiful, girl/ That’s why it’ll never work/You had me suicidal, suicidal/When you said it’s over”), plus Robert Plant-style squalls tossed in for good measure. Think Kurt Cobain crashing a surf party while George Thorogood parks the getaway car. Fresh off their stint at the South by Southwest performance orgy (or as fresh as Brooklyn-based woebegone rockers can look), they make a stop at Harpers Ferry (158 Brighton Avenue, Allston, 617.254.9743).
