Oscar Night America at the Langham Hotel

Oscar Night America at the Langham Hotel

Despite what they say about Boston becoming Hollywood East, when it comes down to Tinseltown’s big night, the pomp and ceremony of the Oscars feel a continent away. Nothing like a red carpet to close the gap. The Ellie Fund, a nonprofit that provides free support services to breast- cancer patients and their families, is hosting the Commonwealth’s only Oscar Night America event. The black-tie affair, which will be at the Langham Hotel (250 Franklin Street, Boston), invites film buffs to watch the live ceremony the way football fans watch the Super Bowl: in enthusiastic company. Posters and programs for the event are FedEx’d in the morning from the Academy, and the food competes for a starring role. Oysters from Island Creek and the Langham’s famous Chocolate Bar are among the night’s nominees. Nab a VIP pass ($250/$150 general admission) and get there around 6:30 p.m. to stroll the red carpet, emcee’d by DJ Candy O’Terry. WCVB-TV5’s Susan Wornick and David Brown host the night. For tickets, visit www.elliefund.org. Be prepared to star-spot.

Bonding Time

Bond at the Langham Hotel (250 Franklin Street, Boston, 617.451.1900) is the latest incarnation of hotel bar chic: the seats are plush, the colors are rich, and the vibe is retroglam meets modernday lounge. The seemingly mile-high ceilings, luxe red barstools set against a 12-foot-tall mirrored bar backdrop, and original glistening chandeliers add a sense of subdued opulence to the former home of the Federal Reserve Bank. And the drinks? They pay homage to the building’s money-lending roots. Sip the Sawbuck Martini (pearflavored Grey Goose, fresh lime juice, ginger, and basil) or a quarter martini (tequila, pomegranate juice, lime juice, and chili flakes). But don’t expect to pay face value for them; Bond cocktails average between $12 and $14. Or you could really stimulate the economy by booking the private mezzanine-level Dom Perignon lounge for you and up to 18 of your slightly self-important, champagne-sipping friends. Its juxtaposition of approachability (the lunch menu lists jumbo Kobe beef hot dogs) against an air of utter sophistication (see above-mentioned bubbly lounge) means Bond can take the Financial District from a neighborhood known for beers with the Yah Dude crowd to a destination for the see-and-be-seen set....

We’ve been lucky enough to laze around in the treatment rooms of a great majority of the spas around town. But there’s one that we’ve been anticipating ever since we heard the first whispers about it: Chuan Body + Soul at the Langham Hotel (250 Franklin...
