Here Comes the Sun(tan)

While many across the rest of the country are already sunning themselves in short sleeves and bare legs, we’re still trying to recover from the chapped lips, dull skin, and dried-out locks left over from our New England winter. Luckily, some of our favorite city spas are offering treatments to help us get warm weather-ready.

Problem: Scaly hands and feet
Solution: France Hand and Foot Treatment ($65) at Spa Christine (699 East Broadway, South Boston,
617.269.0019)
How it works: Essential oils of French lavender, lemongrass, and sage leave hands hydrated and feet ready for their post-winter debut in strappy sandals. The hour-long treatment culminates in a super-indulgent hand, foot, and scalp massage that’ll surely have you swooning.

Problem: Dehydrated, broken-out facial skin brought on by radical changes in temperature
Solution: Seven Herbs Treatment ($125) at Toscana Day Spa (231 Newbury Street, Boston, 617.424.1234)
How it works: This all-organic detoxifying treatment harnesses the power of ground ivy, dandelion, and black elderflower in a cleanser, an exfoliating treatment, several masks, and a peel customized to the specific needs of each client’s skin.

Problem: All-over dull, dry skin and the lingering effects of that minor case of winter-induced depression
Solution: Dry Skin Relief Treatment ($170) at the Spa at the Sports Club/LA (4 Avery Street, Boston, 617.375.8580)
How it works: Consider it an investment in your mental health as a whole: the treatment leads off with a full-body exfoliation, good for sloughing off the dead skin that’s bringing you down, followed by a soy-based moisturizing balm. From there, you’re wrapped up to ensure that as much good-for-skin stuff as possible sinks in and then treated to a head rub while you soak.

Problem: Parched, brittle locks left undefended against the elements
Solution: Sun & Sport Protection Treatment ($50)
at Dessange Paris (501 Tremont Street, Boston, 617.236.0101)
How it works: As your outdoor time increases (patio dining, South End strolls, roof deck cookouts, yay!), it’s important
to ensure that hair is protected against the elements — especially when it’s left weakened after a difficult winter. A combination of plant extracts and sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays are what make this treatment effective.
