Have you ever noticed that your
pre-event prep period sometimes takes longer than the actual event you end up
attending? (Those false eyelashes don't exactly apply themselves.) And often,
if those few hours of grooming involve a few friends, a few closets, and a few
too many glasses of wine, they can turn out way more fun than the festivities
themselves.
With that sentiment in mind, local groups are hosting their own
parties that combine two of our favorite things: revelry - usually accompanied
by a good, strong cocktail - and beauty. The latest launch, Makeovers
and Martinis, is kicking off on Monday, October 26, at Good
Life (28 Kingston Street, Boston, 617.451.2622) from 7 to 10 p.m.
The perfect post-work get-together with the girls, this monthly event allows
you and your friends to hang out, grab a drink, and put yourselves in the
capable hands of hairstylists from Shag (840 Summer Street,
Boston, 617.268.2500) and local makeup artist Miss Michelle, who's just coming
off a stint working behind the runways at New York Fashion Week. They'll supply
both tips and touch-ups gratis; once you're fully primped, it's onto the dance
floor with beats provided by DJ Ms. Thang.
And leave it to a rock bar to celebrate big hair. Revolution
Rock Bar (200 High Street, Boston, 617.261.4200) is hosting a Hair
Nation party on Saturday, October 24, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. With
veteran LA-based DJ StoneRokk behind the turntable, the night will be an ode to
'80s hair bands - so of course the organizers are encouraging patrons to
shellac their heads with Aquanet and strut down the red carpet in the biggest,
baddest, most outrageous 'dos they can conceive. Just be careful, lest some overly enthusiastic
headbanging ruin all your tease 'n' spray work (that personal hole in the ozone
layer shouldn't be for nothing).
Of course, it is nearly Halloween, and where would this round-up
be without a beauty event with a ghoulish twist? Get into the spirit - it falls
on a Saturday this year, after all - on October 31 with Coiffure
du Costume at Salon Capri (31 Lincoln
Street, Newton Highlands, 617.969.1970). Begin the diet-starts-Monday gorging
early with cider and the requisite candy treats while the salon's team of
stylists caters to your every Halloween whim. Call ahead for an appointment,
and for just $35 (wash not included), they'll fashion your locks into any coif
your costume requires - think flapper waves, trailer-trash teased, hippie
dreadlocks, or whatever else you dare to dream up. It's an investment that's
sure to pay off when you run into your ex's plastic-wigged, wart-nosed new
girlfriend later that evening ...
