We love a good, middle-of-the-recession success story: JP’s loft-like Station 8 Salon
(761 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, 617.553.4884), which opened its
doors quietly back in November, is already poised for growth. The
3000-square-foot, five-stylist space (where cuts range from $40 to $55)
was, at press time, about to add manicure, massage, and waxing
services. Our curiosity about anything spa-related outside the environs
of Newbury Street got the best of us, so we checked in with the team
for more details. Tell me about the Station 8 concept.
Drew Carroll, co-owner/stylist: We wanted to create a
salon in JP that had the style and the aesthetic of Newbury Street and
had a team of stylists that were more experienced than the typical
salon, and bring it to JP, as a trendy, up-and-coming neighborhood. Josh, you didn’t have any experience in the beauty business before this, correct?
Josh Johnson, co-owner: Me, personally? No. [Josh’s family owns Newbury Street landmark Johnson Paint Company.] So how did the rest of the team convince you to get involved?
Josh: Pam [Goodale] and I have been friends [for around
10 years], and I knew that she’d been interested in doing something on
her own for a while, and I just kind of like business. We started
talking to people. And people are more likely to change doctors than
they are to change hairstylists. With their experience on the hair end,
it just seemed like a no-brainer. ...
