Take a Sigg

Here’s a fact to choke on: bottled water is an enormous part of the global problem of plastic waste that plagues our landfills and our oceans. In 2005, in this country alone, approximately 52 billion plastic bottles were not recycled, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. A huge portion of this wasted plastic ends up in oceans, creating gigantic, floating garbage patches. Makes you want to go for a swim, doesn’t it? And we have our plastic-water-bottle-toting selves to blame. About 80 percent of plastic waste products, says the NRDC, are water bottles. So with these statistics in mind, I set out to find an earth-friendly — and pocket-sized — alternative. The stainless steel Sigg vintage oval bottle ($27.99) is small enough to fit in your purse or shove into a coat pocket, and compact enough to sneak into a movie theater. In fact, it bears a striking resemblance to a pocket flask. These eco-conscious bottles might not be just for water carrying. Just sayin’. Pick up your own at Greenward (1764 Mass Ave, Cambridge, 617.395.1338).
