In a time of near double-digit unemployment, news about company executives misspending tax dollars and A.I.G. scandals, Mr. Riggs should have shown some common sense by not flaunting how big his TV is or how well stocked he keeps his sub-zero fridge. This does nothing for the reputation of his company that has recently gone through several layoffs. Success is a great thing, shallowness is not. Now that he has the designed apartment, the money and the accoutrements, he should look into buying some class.

I work at Endeca, and frankly I'm disgusted by much of the comment thread.

Without a doubt, Riggs could have exercised better judgment than to be featured in a piece that evokes some of the worst stereotypes of corporate executives. At the very least, he could have insisted on keeping his employer's name out of the article.

But that hardly excuses the commenters using the article as a pretext to take cheap shots at Endeca. I can only assume that they are cowards with an axe to grind, hiding under the veil of anonymity. Endeca is not perfect, but it has earned a reputation as great company to work for. Don't take my word for it; ask people familiar with the industry.

I understand how people who have lost their jobs, either through layoffs or performance terminations, may be bitter and want to vent. I also know that some people don't think twice about anonymously defaming their competitors. But it still makes me sick.

An Endeca executive trying to claim the moral highground is laughable.  Endeca is contaminated by a lot of "isms"- and this article validates part of what a lot of employees and former employees have been saying for years.

Additionally Endeca fires people without valid cause all the time and then tries to either lie about it or spin it.  Remember Jim Baum? I will bet that a lot of people wish that they had kept him around. Daniel Tunkelang either doesn't know what he is talking about (he's never in the office) or was asked to respond.  For him to blame all of these responses on employees who were let go because of "performance terminations" or on competitors is absurd.  At least some of these posts are by current employees as we can clearly see by the e-mail posted by Priceless.

Riggs should hire the designer to come in to his office and perhaps others to make their offices less threatening to women.  Perhaps they could install readily accessible escape exits or panic buttons. Fortunately all it takes to render him catatonic is bare feet.

Karma Man we'd all love to hear more about the BPD incident with Steve Papa by the way.

Jealousy is simply and clearly the fear that you do not have value.  Jealousy scans for evidence to prove the point - that others will be preferred and rewarded more than you.  There is only one alternative - self-value.  If you cannot love yourself, you will not believe that you are loved.  You will always think it's a mistake or luck.  Take your eyes off others and turn the scanner within.  Find the seeds of your jealousy, clear the old voices and experiences.  Put all the energy into building your personal and emotional security.  Then you will be the one others envy, and you can remember the pain and reach out to them.

I understand there seems to be a lot of anger about Mark and Endeca's executive team, however I would like to bring a slightly different perspective on this:

Although this is undoubtedly a nice little refurbishment exercise, if that really reflects where an Endeca SVP lives, then it's pretty clear to me that there is nothing to expect from this company! This is neither a large place nor an exceptional one by any standards - sorry for Mr Bang and Mr Olufsen. Not too long ago (2 years back), the Endeca execs were telling their folks they would become a $1B company. The following year it was discounted to $500M... Well trust me on this one: they will never go substantially further than their current 100M run rate because their exec team is the best illustration of Peter's principle on earth. And showcasing this place as if it was stunning is mostly ridiculous after all - but very much in line with the the company's taste for overstatement unfortunately. Pretty sad...

June 30, 2009 2:31 PM
Well... said:

Fair points, especially about the zero pct chance that Endeca will ever become what it could have (a slow decline from "$1B!!", to "Team 500", to "how about we get back to $100M", to "our success is in the amount of cash we have in the bank").  Sad sad sad.  I wonder when someone will have the balls to call the childish exec team on their mismanagement (what company still has the founders in charge eight years on????).
