The last time we dabbled in indoor horticulture, it didn't end up going too well. Long story short: the misadventure involved our college dorm room, a red Solo cup bathed in fluorescent light, and a very angry RA who discovered our stash when we inadvertently brought the wrong batch of brownies to the floor meeting. (On the plus side, we were really popular party guests for the rest of our academic careers.) That said, we're still encouraging you to check out the cool approach of these
Grow Bottles, which recently arrived at
Greenward (1764 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, 617.395.1338). Made from recycled wine bottles by Potting Shed Creations, these reusable vessels are designed to let us grow culinary herbs indoors year-round. They're perfect for urbanites lacking green space and/or green thumbs: they rely on hydroponics, a soil-less method for growing plants, and everything you need - from seeds to clay growing pebbles - is included in the kit. For $34.99 each, you can snatch up bottles that will start sprouting fresh herbs like basil, mint, and oregano within a week or two. It's an easy intro to indoor gardening. But even more convenient? If we do get the urge to grow other herbal options, we'll already have all the fixings for our pizza munchies.
