For years, the part of Cambridge roughly bounded by Inman, Kendall, and Central Squares has been rich in technology and research firms but restaurant poor. In the past year, a gaggle of intrepid operators has decided to make an oasis of this desert. Among the new arrivals are Bondir (279A Broadway, 617.661.0009), from Jason Bond - perhaps the most sublime chef-owned small restaurant to debut recently; Area Four (500 Technology Square, 617.758.4444), another go at an urban restaurant by Lumire's highly regarded Michael Leviton; and Meadhall (4 Cambridge Center, 617.714.4372), a beer-geek paradise with more than a hundred beers on tap. Also, expected to open soon are Catalyst (300 Technology Square, 617.986.0218), a chef-owned indie helmed by the acclaimed William Kovel, formerly of Aujourd'hui; Abigail's (291 Third Street), with former South End Formaggio chef Jason Lord as top toque; and Kika Tapas (350 Third Street), a Spanish restaurant from the Tapeo team. Maybe now the City of Cambridge will see fit to give this neighborhood a real name, not just a number.
