We've belonged to our share of official-sounding organizations - the Zach Morris Fan Club (c'mon, we were 12) and Student Council among them - but we're especially excited about a new group that's dedicated to more adult pursuits. LUPEC, which stands for Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails, calls itself "a classic cocktail society dedicated to breeding, raising, and releasing nearly extinct drinks into the wild." The group was originally founded in Philadelphia in 2001; Misty Kalkofen, bar manager at Green Street (280 Green Street, Cambridge, 617.876.1655), launched the Boston chapter in February. The group's 10 members range from industry pros - Joy Richard of Tremont 647 (647 Tremont Street, Boston, 617.266.4600) and Lauren Clark, founder of Drinkboston.com - to casual tipplers, including a local artist, an event planner, and a writer/publicist. The ladies of LUPEC Boston - who are known by "cocktail alter-egos" such as Mimi and Pink Lady - gather monthly for discuss-and-sip meetings with themes including "Drinkin' Dames in Classic Cinema" and "New Orleans Cocktails and Famous Women of the Big Easy." But it's not all about the booze: LUPEC Boston also raises funds for area women in need. September brings "This One's For the Ladies," a month-long drink promotion; participating bars, including Green Street and Eastern Standard (528 Comm Ave, Boston, 617.532.9100), donate the profits of a LUPEC-sponsored cocktail to local domestic-violence programs. LUPEC Boston will also host a Sadie Hawkins Dance for Domestic Violence Awareness Month on October 7. Stay tuned for details on a co-ed classic cocktail party in November, featuring a weather-appropriate spirit.
