Twist: Spirit of Giving

THERE ARE certain tastes that evoke the clearest memories for us: gin and tonics = summer afternoons on Nantucket. Spiked hot chocolate = ski trips up North. Sour-apple martinis = that tragic night in college. Now the titans at Absolut have captured the essence of a city with Absolut New Orleans, a limited-edition flavored vodka. The spirit, enhanced with mango and black pepper to personify the fun-loving spice of the city, comes in a bottle emblazoned with a brass harmonica to honor the Big Easy's rich musical traditions. (The inscribed "L.O. Smith Trio" recognizes Lars Olsson Smith, founder of Absolut.) While more than two years have passed since Hurricane Katrina, the need for funds in the region has yet to taper off, so 100 percent of the profits from Absolut New Orleans will benefit relief organizations along the Gulf Coast. Beneficiaries include nonprofits such as New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, Hands On Gulf Coast, and Volunteer Mobile. Make your "contribution" of just $23.99 per bottle at Charles Street Liquors (143 Charles Street, Boston, 617.523.5051), or swing by Ruth's Chris (45 School Street, Boston, 617.742.8401) for a taste: on their cocktail list is the Spicy Mango Martini ($10), made with Absolut New Orleans, housemade fresh lemon sour, and black peppercorns. For more drink ideas or details about any of the charities involved, visit www.absolut.com/neworleans. And since this is only the first flavor in Absolut's "Cities" campaign, you can still get your nominations in for next year. (We think Boston would taste like clam chowder and Fenway franks, with a hint of Big Dig grit.)
