Cool as a cucumber
Our totally illogical side likes to think that eating a salad for dinner will magically counteract all the calories we consume sipping cocktails. (Yes, we also subscribe to the philosophy that ordering a Diet Coke with a Big Mac and fries somehow constitutes a healthy lunch.) So we were eager to kill two birds with one stone by putting the veggies in our vodka with the summer’s cool (yet hot) spirit: Square One Organic Cucumber Vodka. From the makers of the original Californiabased organic vodka, this cucumberflavored version does exactly what a good vodka is supposed to do: blends seamlessly with other liquors and mixers, and goes down smoothly on its own. Square One’s latest creation is available in the cucumber martini ($11.50) — a refreshing mixture of Square One Cucumber, housemade cucumber purée, a pinch of sugar, and a bit of fresh lime juice — at 28 Degrees (One Appleton Street, Boston, 617.728.0728). Or opt for the Caprese martini ($12) — a combination of Square One Cucumber, a splash of Hendrick’s Gin, lemon juice, and tomatowater consommé, garnished with a piece of buffalo mozzarella wrapped in fresh basil and a cherry tomato — served at Sage (1395 Washington Street, Boston, 617.248.8814). This certainly isn’t your Gardenvariety martini. Want to test your green thumb? Pick up a bottle ($35) at Brix Wine Shop (1284 Washington Street, Boston, 617.542.BRIX, ext. 1).
