DADDY’S FRIED DOUGH
You know you probably shouldn’t, but there’s something irresistible about strolling around Boston Common on a sunny weekend with an oversized square of Daddy’s glistening, steaming deep-fried dough ($4). This sweet, unhealthy confection may just evoke tender memories of the county fairs, carnivals, amusement parks, and church festivals of your youth.
For an extra dollar, the hardworking proprietor, who’s there barking his wares to passing tourists every day, will add a dollop of various pie fillings, which include blueberry, apple, cherry, and custard with chocolate syrup. They’re unremarkable; skip them. Instead, stick to the classic preparation, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon until you say “When.” You’ll want to walk this snack off (or perhaps sleep it off) soon after, but it’s tough to feel too guilty about such a simple, nostalgic pleasure.
