Foward Thinking

Viewed: 437

Todd Bennett, general manager, City Bar and MJ O’Connor’s at the Westin Boston Waterfront

“Right now with the economy, I think things are going to stay pretty stagnant as far as business. I think more people are trying to focus on keeping the business they have and surviving, rather than reinventing the wheel.

“Consumers are probably looking for a smaller bar to hang out in, loungey atmosphere; a feeling of being at home and knowing the bartenders and feeling comfortable. I think beer-wise, it’s pretty much going more towards craft brewers, and more microbrews are back. Martinis, people say they’re dead. But I think they’re a huge hit when they’re made with fresh ingredients.

“I think different areas are thriving — the Seaport area has picked up. The city itself I think will stay pretty strong. It’s more the suburbs that are being hurt by the economy. I think drinking is part of good times and bad times. Bars sometimes are recession-proof, because when times are bad, people are going to drink.”
