Bodies by Boston 2010

By Kara Baskin and Scott Kearnan

Here in the magazine industry, we’re often accused of being superficial. It’s all about surface, say the critics; only the shallow sells, accuse the cynics.

What, you want us to save the world when we’re talking about shoes?

We hear you. Don’t tell anyone, but underneath our icy (and ahem, incredibly well-dressed) exteriors lie human hearts that beat, and bleed, like anyone else’s. Yeah, we get sick of seeing unrealistically thin supermodels too; believe us, you can’t eat, drink, and party in this business without gaining an unwanted inch here and there. And while we adore primping and pampering to look our best, we too think it’s sad when society takes a preoccupation with appearances to the extreme.

So for this year’s Body issue, we wanted to do something different. If you’re looking for the standard pictorial of washboard abs, ballooned cleavage, and bulging biceps, we invite you to hit the newsstand and pick up any magazine on the rack; we doubt you’ll have trouble finding it.

Instead, we captured Boston bodies that express the essence of the person inside, selected subjects who surprise us, amaze us, inspire us, and teach us. Yes, some of them make us drool, too — we think you’ll find plenty of enviable physiques in here. Just remember that’s not the only reason we chose them.

So much for shallow. If anything, we hope this issue inspires you to look in the mirror and discover your own body’s unique story.

Oh, but while you’re looking … maybe take off those shoes?  They don’t go. At all.
