072309 Get Out

Summer workdays are supposed to be the domain of generously long lunch breaks under warm rays — the kind that do convenient double duty by sating our hunger and renewing our base tan. Granted, the recent deluges dampening our plans may have something else to say about that, but at least the maestros at Berklee College of Music are still orchestrating some midday entertainment for those days when we can escape the great indoors for a soup, sandwich, or salad in the sunshine. On Thursdays through September 10, the college is sponsoring its fifth Kendall Square Concert Series, which features performances by student and alumni musicians in the outdoor plaza at 300 Athenaeum Street in Cambridge's Kendall Square. The free concerts run from noon to 1:30 p.m. each week, and the music ranges from hip-hop to folk, rock to reggae, and more. Visit Berklee’s website for the full schedule of upcoming musicians. Today, you can put something spicy on your lunch menu with La Timbistica, a six-piece Latin band that plays tunes of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian influence. Keep your eyes on the skies and check www.berklee.edu/events for cancellations, because these concerts are postponed during inclement weather. But summer is only half over, so even if our city keeps channeling Seattle's weather this week, we still have plenty of chances to add a little extra beat to our break.
