The general gists of mixology and astrology aren’t all that far apart. Think about it: they’re both based on the idea that unique interactions of factors ― whether they be combinations of certain liquors or permutations of planetary placement ― have the power to affect our personalities. Besides, haven’t you found yourself seeing stars after a few too many nightcaps? So it makes perfect sense that artist Gwen Sutherland-Kaiser would dub a drink approach “barstrology” and marry the stars and sipping with her business Intoxicated Zodiac. Among the favorites we’ve found in her bar wares are Celestial Cocktail Candles. For the series of 12 scented candles, she uses medieval herbal astrology, which assigns sun signs to plants, to concoct a unique fragrance for each member of the zodiac wheel, like Leo’s “Rose Geranium Orange Gimlet.” Once burned away, the candle’s container provides a nifty bar tumbler ($34) that can be refilled with a cocktail made from the enclosed recipe designed for your sign: we think Cancer’s “Cucumber Lychee Fizz” should keep lushes from getting too crabby. Smaller shot glass candles ($14) are also available, and Intoxicated Zodiac has plenty of other curious cocktail supplies worth perusing, including wedding gift glassware that ascribes marital dynamics based on “I Do!” date. Not a believer? Sutherland-Kaiser decorates one wine glass with an appropriately alcohol-related opinion from Carl Jung: “We are born at a given moment, in a given place, and, like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season of which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more.” Now that’s the kind of quote that only comes after a few drinks.
